AFRICAN AVIATION AWARDS

The prestigious African Aviation Awards were introduced in 1999 by AFRICAN AVIATION in order to give international recognition to organisations, companies and individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to aviation development in Africa. Every year, an extensive evaluation of the African aviation industry is undertaken by AFRICAN AVIATION in close consultation with leading aviation experts within and outside Africa, as well as with aviation industry consumers. 

In addition, visitors to the AFRICAN AVIATION website www.africanaviation.com and readers of AFRICAN AVIATION will soon be able to vote online to select their preferred choice in each category of the African Aviation Awards.

  • African Low Cost Carrier of the Year
  • African Cargo Airline of the Year
  • African Airport of the Year
  • African Civil Aviation Authority of the Year
  • Outstanding Achievement Award for Services to the African Aviation Industry
  • Lifetime Achievement Award recognising Careers of Exemplary Service and Extraordinary Contribution to the African Aviation Industry

The Air Finance Africa Awards include:

  • Air Finance Africa Deal of the Year
  • Aircraft Leasing Company of the Year

The African Aviation Law Awards include:

  • African Aviation Law Firm of the Year
  • International Aviation Law Firm of the Year
  • African Aviation Lawyer of the Year

1 1999: Kenya Airways won the African Airline of the Year Award. It was presented to Brian Davies (centre), the airline’s CEO, in Washington, DC, by Ousman Ahmed Abani (right), Minister of Transport, Niger.

2 1999: Col. (rtd) Semret Medhane, former CEO, Ethiopian Airlines and Secretary General, African Airlines Association (AFRAA), received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry.

3 1999: Engineer Mohammed Fahim Rayan, Chairman & CEO, EgyptAir, received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry.

4 1999: Captain Mohammed Ahmed, Secretary General, African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and former CEO, Ethiopian Airlines, received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry.

5 1999: Sir Harry Tirvengadum, Director General, Air Afrique, and former Chairman & CEO, Air Mauritius, received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry.

6 2000: Kenya Airways won the African Airline of the Year Award. It was presented to Isaac Omolo Okero (right), the airline’s Chairman, by Dr Abdullah M. Omar (left), Minister of Transport, South Africa.

7 2000: John Morrison, Chief Executive of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry.

8 2001: Rodney E. Slater, the former United States Secretary of Transportation (left), received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for his immense contribution to aviation development in Africa, during the ‘Safe Skies for Africa’ Conference in Washington, DC, organised by AFRICAN AVIATION. The Award was presented by Air Vice Marshal Abdel Fattah M. Kato, President, African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and Chairman, Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority.

9 2001: Dr Kema Chikwe (centre), Nigeria’s first-ever female Minister of Aviation, received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry. It was presented to her by Norman Y. Mineta (right), the US Secretary of Transportation.

10 2003: DAS Air Cargo received the African Cargo Airline of the Year Award for an unprecedented fifth time in a row. It was presented to Captain Joe Roy (right), the airline’s Chairman and CEO, in Morocco, by Michael Kafabusa Werikhe, Minister of State for Works, Housing & Communications, Uganda.

11 2003: Christian Folly-Kossi, Secretary General, AFRAA, received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for outstanding services to the African aviation industry.

12 2003: Bellview Airlines, Nigeria, won the African Regional Airline of the Year Award. It was presented to Kayode Odukoya (right), the airline’s founder and CEO. Bellview Airlines also won the same Award in 2004.

13 Gert van der Veer (right), former Chairman and CEO of South African Airways, and member of the IATA Training Fund (IATF), received an African Aviation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 for his outstanding services to the African and international aviation industries. He is congratulated by a long-standing friend, Sassy N’Diaye (left).

14 Kenya Airways won the 2004 African Airline of the Year Award for the fourth time. It was presented to the airline’s CEO, Titus Naikuni (centre), accompanied by his wife, by Minister Michael Werikhe of Uganda, in Mauritius.

15 2007: Michael Shirima (left), founder and Chairman of Precisionair, Tanzania, accompanied by his wife, received an African Aviation Individual Achievement Award for his outstanding services to the African aviation industry.
